[ - ] When I visit my family, especially my mother, I realize why I am on the divorce landscape. Took me decades to understand that her self-centeredness drove her kids to look for acceptance and belonginging with partners who were not qualified. A lackluster father figure set low expectations for the daughters in the men they married. I tried not to get a divorce and prevent that cycling but I've come to realize I've made a poor choice in a partner and it is best to end it (he is a compulsive spender and I was an enabler for too long). 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yes. I have to say in many ways I grew up without parents in the traditional sense. Never attended a single school function. Never asked about my life. It was always about what I could do for them. As my kids get older, I'm embarassed to explain why g-mother wants to spend all waking day in the garden during our visit. When she has free time she watches internet TV. She is pissed off that I mentioned my father who is dead and whom she divorced years and years ago. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Divorce studies show that children of divorced parents are more likely to get divorced themselves. There are reasons for that. I didn't want to believe it, but understand it as I am now a parent. I'm worried that I'll repeat the same crap to my kids. I know my mother was driven to make poor partner choices herself due to an unsupportive family environment. Anybody seems like a good choice when there isn't any support in the first place. [ Reply | More ]

I know what you mean, OP. It isn't about blaming, but it can be useful to get a clear-eyed look at your parents and how you grew up when you are trying to change a behavior pattern that isn't productive. That said, I think it's more important to examine your plan going forward than it is to spend a lot of time exploring the past. It's moderately useful, but there are diminishing levels of return and lots of people get stuck and use it as an excuse/crutch. Not saying you are doing this, but I think the more interesting and relevant exploration is in determining what you want in your adult life now and in the future. [ Reply | More ]

What's your housing budget? Are you looking for a single family home (they're harder to come by in some neighborhoods). There are a number of magnet schools in the city, but they're very difficult to get into. Some neighborhoods in the city (Lakeview, Lincoln Park, etc.) do have good public schools but home prices reflect this. From what I've heard (I only have a one-year old), there are a number of neighborhoods where the elementary schools are pretty good, but junior high and high school leaves much to be desired. The Lab Schools is on the South Side. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not for everyone (I say that as someone who was a downpayment away from moving there). With that said, Hyde Park is a beautiful neighborhood and your money will go further than it will on the North Side. What kind of neighborhood are you looking for? If you need a good amount of space, a townhouse in the West Loop or South Loop could work for you. I don't think the schools are great, but if you're doing private it doesn't really matter. The Latin School is a popular private school in the Gold Coast area. The neighborhood is very nice and in a great location, but it's also very expensive. if you're willing to consider the burbs, you might also want to check out Evanston, Oak Park and River Forest. They're all very nice suburbs and close to the city with good downtown areas. The high school in Evanston isn't great, but it's my understanding the lower grades are still good. Oak Park and River Forest are about 30 minutes from downtown, which is about the same distance as some neighborhoods in the city. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks so much. Our budget is about 2M, which appears to leave us with a lot of great options. We prefer more low-key family neighborhoods (we live in fort Greene, Brooklyn now) but also like the ease of apartment living. So I suppose the ideal would be a large apartment in a residential area, but definetly still open to single family houses and could see that being preferable if the right house came about. Hyde park is definetly appealing to us but does seem a bit isolated on the south. Looking for at least 2000 soft, fortunately it seems like there's a lot more quality housing stock (apts too) with this amount of space in Chicago. [ Reply | More ]

Lincoln Park or Gold Coast are good options for what you want. You'll be fine with your budget. I lived in Hyde Park and felt very isolated, especially for people not involved with the university (and it can be very difficult to get in to Lab without a connection.) There are some good public elementary schools, but all the good high schools are selective enrollment so you'll have to apply: Whitney Young, Northside College Prep, Walter Payton, maybe Jones and Lane Tech, Lincoln Park IB. Probably others I'm forgetting. Private may be the way to go. Latin is the classic private school, and it is K through HS so you could have all your kids in the same place, if they have space in those grades. Frances Parker is also excellent, but more progressive, so it doesn't appeal to everyone. British is great, and they are building new space that looks fantastic. People love Catherine Cook, but it only goes through 8th. [ Reply | More ]

Look in Roscoe Village. You can find a beautiful single family home with good schools and it's close to downtown. It's very family oriented for a city neighborhood and there are a lot of transplants. [ Reply | More ]

I posted above (with the list of schools.) I totally agree with the rec for Roscoe Village if you want single family, but not for apartments. I love that neighborhood. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] What are my rights as a customer? I paid in full to get a service at a store, then they said that they can't fulfil the original service, when I asked to cancel the transaction since they can't fulfil my request they said they have a no-return policy. I didn't purchase any product from them so I don't understand why no return policy would apply to me. But the store owner doesn't accept to cancel the transaction and is offering store credit. I have no trust in them and wouldn't want to go there anymore. Since store owner is not accepting the cancellation of transaction, can I call my credit company and ask to them to cancel the transaction? 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think you have to tell us what the service you're talking about is, because it doesn't make a ton of sense the way you're telling it. [ Reply | More ]

this is a store selling eye glasses, frames. I went there simply to replace lenses in an existing frame after my current frame was slightly damaged and became difficult to use. They said they can replace it in the same day over the phone. I went to the store and at the store they said it might take 2-3 days. I said okay. So I paid for whatever they asked for, I said they would charge my VSP and I would get the portion that VSP covers back from VSP. After a few days, they called and said that they can not place the lenses in my frames were a different model and they dont't have the apparatus, and I have two options: either have them replace the lenses and don't hold them responsible if they break the frame; or buy a new frame from them. So I went to the store and told them that I don't want to buy another frame and asked them to cancel the transaction because the original agreement was they would replace lenses on the frame that I had left with them. The store owner told me they can't cancel the payment because they have a no refund policy and basically forced me to get a store credit. I felt I have no options and got the store credit. Later, after a few weeks, I didn't get any payment from VSP, so called VSP and found out that the store owner sent the claim in a way so that the store ended up being paid by VSP. So I paid the store owner, and VSP has paid the store owner; the crook got paid TWICE! According to VSP claim, I also got an eye exam from them, which I didn't. Long story short, I want to return their store credit and don't want to have any kind of business with them. I called VSP and they said they would correct the situation. I also called the credit card company but they are not working today. Would credit company accept to cancel the transaction under these circumstances? [ Reply | More ]

Dont even bother with the store anymore- just call the credit card company to dispute and they will give you your money back and take it away from the store - it's called a chargeback. [ Reply | More ]

They would cancel it even if you got the frame fixed since you were charged twice. The way it works is you automatically get the money back from cc at first- then it takes time for the cc company to investigate with the vision store- you give them this detail and the charge should sustain its cancellation. ITA. OP, you are absolutely in the right here. Dispute the charge with the credit card company. It's as easy as that. I have disputed a number of things over the years and it has always worked out. Don't worry. [ Reply | More ]
