Oakland - Oreo cookies and Fig Newtons may become the next target of anti-smoking activists. Alameda County supervisors are asking the county counsel's office to investigate whether they can stop buying food products made by subsidiaries or other companies owned by tobacco firms.
Friday, Feb. 5 Sacramento - Boys respond differently than girls to common air pollutants, says a $15 million study commissioned by the Air Resources Board. Boys living in communities with smog-forming contaminants wheeze more. Girls have lower breathing capacity, the study says. The study will track 5,000 children until 2001.

Oakland - Former Mayor Elihu Harris fell just short of a majority vote in his bid to win back his old state Assembly seat. Harris, the top vote-getter among three Democratic candidates with 48.8% of the vote, faces Audie Elizabeth Bock of the Green Party in a March runoff election.
