Sioux City - The first lady of Tanzania will make a diplomatic visit to western Iowa. Anna MKapa will arrive Feb. 18 in Sioux City for a four-day visit. She will tour area health facilities and universities.
Monday, Feb. 8
Des Moines - The number of underage drinkers would drop if an electronic device that can read driver's licenses were installed in Iowa's bars, said Jack Nystrom, administrator of the Iowa Alcoholic Beverage Division. The device reads the magnetic strip on a driver's license to determine whether a person is of legal age.
Friday, Feb. 5 Des Moines - Gov. Vilsack signed his first bill, a $71 million increase in education funding, then called for an additional $10 million to boost reading programs. He also unveiled his next education bill.

Des Moines - An insurance company hopes to begin selling a policy that would insure livestock farmers against drops in market prices. If their coverage had been available last year, the American Feed Industry Assn. says pork producers would have received about $1.3 billion in payouts.
Wednesday, Feb. 3 Churdan - Two people died of exposure after apparently slipping on ice outside the home they shared, Greene County authorities said. The elderly couple was found near the garage. . . . Pay Scale - $45-$55 per hour; no maximum.
