Topeka - Lawmakers' annual salary and out-of-session expenses would increase to $21,000 under a bill endorsed by a Senate committee. Senate President Dick Bond said the amount would be cut back in debate. Salary and the monthly non-session expenses now average about $13,000 a year.

Emporia - Some students at state universities can now register for classes on line. Pittsburg State University was first to have the process and at Kansas State University, about half of the students used on line enrollment last semester, officials said. Other schools plan to offer the service soon.
Friday, Feb. 5
Topeka - Foster parents would get a $1,000 income tax credit after a year under a bill being considered by the Senate. Sponsors say they want to end the high turnover rate of foster parents.
Thursday, Feb. 4
Topeka - A proposal to let school districts use the state health plan to provide health insurance for teachers and other employees has the support of Gov. Graves and a bipartisan group of legislators. Supporters say some districts have so few employees they can not negotiate contracts with insurers.
Wednesday, Feb. 3
Topeka - Local officials and special interest groups asked lawmakers to increase taxes for highway repairs at two hearings on transportation issues. . . . Pay Scale - $50 per hour; $5,000 maximum can be waived.
