Salt Lake City - The Utah Senate narrowly defeated legislation that would have mandated coverage for women's contraceptives by insurers that reimburse for prescription drugs. Most insurers offer contraception benefits, the industry says, but employers often chose not to pay for it.

Wednesday, Feb. 17
Salt Lake City - Some state lawmakers want to upgrade driver's licenses, making them difficult to copy or alter. The proposed licenses would have a magnetic strip containing the same information that appears on the front.

Tuesday, Feb. 16
Salt Lake City - While the rest of the nation has experienced a 10.2% drop in crime since 1993, Utah has suffered a 14.5% increase, including a 30% increase in rural crime, FBI statistics show. Critics say the state's criminal justice agencies have been slow in developing a comprehensive plan.

Monday, Feb. 15
Salt Lake City - An Orem man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl in an Emery County chapel in 1997 while he was serving a mission for the Mormon church. Daniel Landeros faces up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine when he is sentenced April 6.
