International funding

We devote a significant amount of our funding to supporting activities outside the UK, including health-related research. Outlined below are the three broad avenues of support available for international research in biomedical science.

Global health research Personal and research support for those working in developing countries, with an emphasis on public health, tropical medicine and building research capacity.
International Senior Research Fellowships Personal support for outstanding researchers wishing to establish independent research careers in India, South Africa and specific restructuring countries of Europe.
Collaborations Collaborations between developing countries and the UK, and major international partnerships between countries with developed market economies (see below for two examples).

Further to the support outlined above, we offer Strategic Awards, which provide flexible forms of support for training or research. We also support international research and activities in biomedical ethics, public engagement and technology transfer.
