Poll: Masuzoe would be best prime minister

Former health minister Yoichi Masuzoe is the nation's preferred prime minister, while Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is languishing in a distant sixth place, according to a recent Yomiuri Shimbun survey.

While 29 percent of respondents chose Masuzoe as their preferred Diet member to be the nation's leader, Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada took second place with 9 percent, and Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Minister Seiji Maehara was third with 8 percent.

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama was preferred by 5 percent of respondents to the survey.

Finance Minister Naoto Kan ranked fourth with 7 percent and Your Party leader Yoshimi Watanabe came in fifth with 6 percent. Former Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano, who recently announced he would form a new party, took the seventh slot with 4 percent.

Masuzoe, a former health, labor and welfare minister, is a member of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party.

According to the survey, among Democratic Party of Japan supporters, Okada ranked first with 21 percent, followed by Masuzoe with 17 percent--eclipsing the 14 percent of respondents who selected Hatoyama. DPJ Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa was sixth with 6 percent.
