You can ask questions and get things done with the help of the Google Assistant on your speaker, Smart Display, or Smart Clock.
Not all Google Assistant devices work the same. For device-specific instructions, contact your manufacturer.
Languages you can use
On speakers, the Google Assistant is available in Chinese (Simplified), Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, and Swedish. More languages are coming soon.
On Smart Displays, the Google Assistant is available in Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish.
Getting started with the Google Assistant on smart speakers
What you need
- A speaker, Smart Display, or Smart Clock with the Google Assistant built in
- Google Home app
version 2.12.5 or higher
- Google Assistant app
version 8.10 or higher
- A Google Account
- A mobile phone or tablet that:
- Has Android 5.0 or higher (phone) or Android 6.0 or higher (tablet)
- Has its language set to an option listed above
- Works with a 5GHz Wi-Fi network (a WPA2-Enterprise network won’t work)
- Has Bluetooth turned on
- An internet connection and secure wireless network
- For Smart Displays: If you already use Duo for video calling, make sure Duo is signed in with the same Google Account as your Smart Display

Plug in your Google Assistant device.

Get the latest version of the Google Home app and Google app:
- Go to the Google Home app page, then tap Install or Update (whichever option appears). If you see "Installed," you already have the latest version.
- Go to the Google app page, then follow the same steps.

Make sure your device has Android 5.0 or higher. Learn how to check and update your Android version.

On your phone or tablet, open the Google Home app
. Follow the steps.
Note: If you don’t see the steps to set up your device: At the bottom left, tap HomeAdd
.
Fix issues during set up
Can’t see Google Assistant device in the Google Home app
- Unplug your device. Wait 10 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Close the Home app

- Open the Home app

Setup freezes or can’t finish
- Unplug your device. Wait 10 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
On the top of your Smart Display, press and hold the volume up and volume down buttons for 20 seconds.
Your device will restart the setup process.
