Pixel phones

Pixel phones install downloaded Android updates in the background. The installed updates become active the next time that you restart your phone. Learn how to restart a Pixel phone.

Nexus, Android One & Google Play edition devices

These devices automatically restart while they install downloaded Android updates. The updates become active when installation finishes.

Let the update automatically try again

If an update doesn't download, your device will automatically try again over the next few days.

• When the update is available again, you'll get a notification. Open the notification and tap the update action.
• If you need to manually check for the update from your Settings app, wait to check until at least 24 hours after the time that the update didn't download.

Update Android version for security updates

To get the latest security update available for your device, make sure that you have the latest Android version available for your device.

Android version updates

Pixel phones get the latest version of Android directly from Google.

If you bought your device from the Google Store, updates will typically reach your device within 2 weeks. If you bought your device elsewhere, updates can take longer.

• Pixel 2 (2017) phones get Android version updates for at least 3 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store. After 3 years, we can't guarantee more updates
• Pixel (2016) phones get Android version updates for at least 2 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store. After 2 years, we can't guarantee more updates.

Security updates

Pixel phones get updates for security issues documented in our Public Android Security Bulletins.

Pixel phones get security updates for at least 3 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store, or at least 18 months from when the Google Store last sold the device, whichever is longer. After that, we can't guarantee more updates.

Telephone or online support

Pixel phones get telephone or online support for at least as long as they get security updates. After that, we can't guarantee continued support.

Android version updates

Nexus devices get the latest version of Android directly from Google.

If you bought your device from the Google Store, updates will typically reach your device within 2 weeks. If you bought your device elsewhere, updates can take longer.

Nexus devices get Android version updates for at least 2 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store. After 2 years, we can't guarantee more updates.

Security updates

Android One phones get the latest version of Android from Google's hardware partners. Google's partners send updates based on their schedules, trying to get them to you as soon as possible.

When your Android One will get updates

After an update is available, it can take up to 2 weeks to reach your phone. When the update is ready to be installed on your phone, a message on your phone will say, "System update available." You'll need to connect to your mobile carrier or Wi-Fi to get the notification and to download the software.

How long your Android One will get updates

All partners have committed to giving software updates for at least 18 months after the phone's launch. All Android One phones will get at least one major software update and several smaller security updates.

Google Play edition devices get updates from the device manufacturers, not directly from Google. Google works closely with the manufacturers to provide system updates shortly after a new Android version is released.

When your Google Play edition device will get updates

After an update is available, it can take up to 2 weeks to reach your device. Based on your carrier, it may take longer than 2 weeks after release to get an update.

How long your Google Play edition device will get updates

If Google Play edition devices fall outside the update window, they may not get the latest version of Android. The update window is usually around 18 months after a device has been released.
