While the Vimeo site and player may work on older setups, we strongly recommend keeping your system as up to date as possible. Browsers and operating systems are constantly releasing bug fixes, security updates, and improvements, and it’s our responsibility to keep up with them as well. Using the latest browser version can always help to prevent weirdness with Vimeo and the Interwebs at large.
Below you’ll find our minimum requirements for vimeo.com, playback, and apps.
Supported browsers — playback
We support playback in browsers that can decode H.264 videos in an HTML5 player. Due to rising security vulnerabilities, Vimeo no longer supports Flash. If you’re using an older browser, system, or website, you’ll need to upgrade to continue watching Vimeo videos.
Here is a list of our supported browsers/versions:
- Chrome 30+ (has automatic updates)
- Firefox 27+ (has automatic updates)*
- Internet Explorer 11*
- Microsoft Edge
- Safari 9+
*H.264 video (required for viewing Vimeo videos) is only supported in Firefox for Windows 7 and later.
*Older versions of Internet Explorer (IE 10, 9, 8, etc) that lack support for the TLS 1.2 protocol and HTML5 cannot be used to play Vimeo videos. As of January 12, 2016, Microsoft has stopped releasing updates to older versions of IE. (Microsoft's official statement on IE support can be found here)
Supported operating systems — playback
The Vimeo player operates in a wide range of operating systems, but we can only guarantee full functionality on systems that are still being supported by their proprietors.
Microsoft has ended support for Windows XP and Windows Vista.
The earliest version of MacOS still receiving extended support from Apple is Sierra (v. 10.12.6), and support for it is rumored to end in September2019. Earlier versions of MacOS (El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, etc) are not supported.
While we still love to hear about Vimeo bugs affecting older systems, we cannot always guarantee they’ll be prioritized or solved in a timely manner.
Mobile/Tablets

⚠️ Blackberry and Windows phone users: You may still able to view Vimeo videos on devices that support HTML5; however, we do not test out our player in these environments and thus cannot guarantee support.

For vimeo.com access and features, we currently support the latest version of the following browsers (mobile/desktop):

Vimeo TV app
Here is a list of all our supported devices for the Vimeo TV app:
- Apple TV (4th generation devices and higher)
- Android TV version 5.0+
- Roku (2nd generation streaming devices and higher)
- Amazon Fire TV devices
- Samsung TVs (2015, 2016, and 2017 Tizen-powered devices)
- Chromecast (via our iOS and Android mobile apps, see below for requirements)
⚠️ The Vimeo app for Blu-Ray players is no longer supported.
⚠️ The Vimeo TV apps for Apple TV 2nd/3rd generation devices are no longer supported.
Vimeo mobile/tablet app
The Vimeo mobile/tablet apps are only available for iOS and Android. As always, we recommend keeping your device as up to date as possible, but here are the minimum requirements for app installation:
- Android (Lollipop) version 5.0+
- iOS version 9.3.5+
Vimeo macOS app
Here is the minimum system requirements for installing and using the Vimeo macOS app:
- macOS 10.12 (Sierra) or higher. Older versions of macOS are not compatible.
Enhanced playback
Live events
Similar to uploaded videos, playback for live events is supported on any setup that supports H.264 videos, HTML5, and Media Source (specifically required for our adaptive streaming system). Please see our supported systems for playback above, with the following exceptions:
- Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 and earlier is not supported for Vimeo Live
- The Samsung Internet browser (all versions) is also not supported for Vimeo Live. We recommend installing Chrome instead.
5K, 6K, 7K, or 8K playback
To view our higher resolution playback versions, you must use a browser that supports h.265 (HEVC) decoding in an HTML5 player.
Here is a list of all the systems we currently support for high resolution playback:
- Safari 11+ on MacOS 10.13 High Sierra or higher
- Microsoft Edge 15+ on Windows 10 (with supported hardware)
HDR playback
To watch an HDR video, you’ll need to have a HDR10 supported screen and a system that supports H.265 (HEVC) playback.
Here is a list of the environments where HDR can be viewed on Vimeo:
- Safari 11+ on an iPhone X models
- Apple TV 4K connected to a HDR10 TV or monitor
⚠️Android, Chromecast, Dolby Vision, and HDR 10+ hardware is not currently supported for HDR on Vimeo.
360° playback
For monoscopic 360° playback on desktop (i.e on a monitor and not within a headset), we recommend using the latest version of the following browsers with WebGL and hardware acceleration enabled in the browser settings:
- Chrome
- Firefox
- Edge
- Safari (only in v. 11.0.2 or higher)
For monoscopic 360° playback on mobile:
- The Vimeo iOS app (version 6.2+) on iOS (version 9.3.5+)
- The Vimeo Android app (version 2.4+) on Android (version 5.0+)
- Embedded videos on Chrome for Android (version 5.0+)
For 360° playback within a mobile headset :
- The Vimeo iOS app (version 6.2+) on iOS (version 9.3.5+)
- The Vimeo Android app (version 2.4+) on Android (version 5.0+)
360 video on Vimeo can only be viewed in headset using the Vimeo mobile app. Examples of mobile headsets are Google Cardboard and the Samsung Gear (without connecting the device to USB).
We do not support 360 playback in VR standalone headsets (such as the Oculus Go), where the Vimeo app cannot be accessed. We’re hoping to expand to more hardware in the future.
⚠️ All mobile devices require a built-in gyroscope sensor for 360° playback playback. Please consult your device’s documentation to confirm it's capabilities.
Internet Connection Requirements (playback)
We require minimum stable speeds of 1 Mbps or faster in order to view our lowest quality, SD 360p. Since bandwidth tends to fluctuate for a number of unforeseen variables, we always recommend you use a dedicated Internet line of 5 Mbps or faster to stream high quality videos on the Internet. For optimal performance, a hardwired connection via Ethernet is best, but if you prefer to use WiFi, be sure that your router is configured correctly and that your network is not being shared with other devices (this can limit the starting speeds you pay your ISP for).
