#Health and Wellbeing

26 Oct 2021
#Health and Wellbeing   Most of us are aware of the part physical health plays in our overall wellbeing, however, our mental health is equally important and sadly something that is often overlooked.   1 in 4 people suffer with mental health issues in the UK, which means in a group of 20 friends, 5 of them are potentially struggling with their mental health.    Male suicides have consistently accounted for approximately three-quarters of all suicides in the UK since the mid-1990s.  On average one man every 2 hours takes his life in the UK and It’s often said a factor…

15 Aug 2021
#Callouts 2021   It has been another busy year for Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) with 72 callouts so far in 2021.   While we like to share our involvement when supporting the statutory emergency services, in particular West Yorkshire Police (WYP) and Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS), there are occasions where, due the sensitivity of the incident, we feel it is better not to share to on our social media pages.    As such it may have seemed CVSRT have been less busy recently. We are indeed as busy as ever and as always we are on call…

#NationalMapReadingWeek

11 Jul 2021
#NationalMapReadingWeek   This week is National Map Reading Week which is aimed to help get you prepared for greater adventures this summer!   Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team along with Mountain Rescue England and Wales recommended when intending to go out in the hills, to be #adventuresmart.    Ask yourself 3 questions before you set off: 1. Do I know what the weather will be like? 2. Do I have the right gear? 3. Do I have the knowledge & skills for the day?   The technology available today is fantastic, but it can fail us by locking up,…

Community Clean Up

07 Jul 2021
Community Clean Up   On the morning of Saturday 26th June a group of Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) supporters, with a little help from some of our operational members, made a visit to Shelf, working with Calderdale Council to clear an area that had unfortunately become littered with rubbish.   Over the space of four hours a large amount of rubbish was collected and cleared with safety measures in place when working on steep ground.     The difference made to area was amazing.    CVSRT supporters regularly give their free time to help out, not only our…

CVSRT New Team Members

22 Jun 2021
CVSRT New Team Members   As a result of the COVID-19 restrictions our new member intake assessment for 2021 unfortunately had to be delayed from its usual timing of January and will now take place in the early hours of 3rd July.    Whilst the event will have a different feel this year with it being held in the height of summer instead of our typical winter schedule, we will still put all applicants through their paces on the hill - testing their navigation throughout the day and night, team work skills, ability to maintain a positive attitude and checking…

#Volunteersweek

04 Jun 2021
#Volunteersweek   This week is volunteers’ week, an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering.    Everyone at Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) commits to hundreds of hours of volunteer time per year for the team, however, we are so much more than the members you see out on the hills.     We have several supporters who regularly give up their time to support training and fundraising events, often lay hiding in the cold wet moors acting as a training casualty and working behind the scenes to enable the team…

#CalderdaleBoundaryRun

27 May 2021
#CalderdaleBoundaryRun   What do you do when national restrictions prevent you from completing events you’ve trained for?     If you’re Jonothan Wright, one of Calder Valley Search and rescue Team’s (CVSRT) operational members, then you hatch a plan to run the entire Calderdale boundary.  Nonstop!   An incredible achievement by Jonothan who has shared a few words outlining his feat.    ______   Earlier this year, I was due to run in the 108-mile Montane Spine Mountain Rescue Team Challenge to raise funds for my local team, Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team. Nev had a long and full career in the police force. A strong theme throughout these years and beyond…

RIP Nev Sharp

Now is not the time to be venturing beyond 'local'

17 Feb 2021
Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team would like to remind our local community to please adhere to the Government lockdown restrictions and only exercise locally to your home. Now is not the time to be venturing into the more remote parts of our countryside and potentially putting yourself in harm’s way. Granted, accidents can happen to anyone, at any time, in any location (even close to home). By definition, an accident is an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury. If an accident happened to you in a remote, inaccessible location, would you know…

Congratulations Laura

05 Feb 2021
#Congratulations Laura   In a normal year, members of Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) gather on the last Tuesday in January to discuss business.  On the agenda for this meeting is the formality of welcoming all of our successful probationary (probie) members to the team as fully fledged operational members.    #Congratulations Laura    However, for everyone throughout the Calder Valley and beyond, the past year has been anything but normal. For our newest team member Laura, our only 2020 new recruit, her journey into the team followed this pattern and was very different than expected.    Laura…
