Nicolas Cage has closed a deal to portray Dracula in the darkly comedic feature “Renfield” at Universal Pictures and Skybound Entertainment.
Nicholas Hoult has been set to star as the title character of R.M. Renfield, an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but is actually a servant of the Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula.
Don’t expect a dark tale though, this is described as a modern-day adventure story with a comedic tone. Chris McKay (“The Tomorrow War,” “The LEGO Batman Movie”) will direct and produce with Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”) penning the script based on an idea by “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman. Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst produce.
Aside from voice acting in “The Croods” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse,” this will mark something of a return by Cage to big studio filmmaking after a decade of indies and a recent run of well-received smaller titles culminating in the acclaimed “Pig” and the upcoming meta-satire “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”.
The project is one of two Dracula-adjacent projects in the works based on elements from Stoker’s novel. The other is the long-gestating “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” which was filmed this past Summer in Germany and Malta.
