MacArthur Genius grant recipient Alex Rivera (“Sleep Dealer,” “The Infiltrators”) is set to write and direct “Zorro 2.0,” a ‘socially grounded sci-fi’ reimagining of the swashbuckling masked avenger, for Sobini Films.
In this version, the iconic character is a young, undocumented hacker named Oscar de la Vega – better known as ‘z0rr0’. Fighting back against a secret government unit that attacked his mother, he discovers a high-tech conspiracy that threatens not only his family but the world.
In a statement to Deadline, Rivera calls the project an opportunity to connect the property to today’s border wars. Mark Amin, Cami Winikoff and Tyler Boehm will produce.
The Zorro character has been portrayed multiple times on screen, the most recent incarnation being the beloved Martin Campbell-directed 1998 film “The Mask of Zorro” starring Antonio Banderas.
