How domain name transfers work

Domain transfers are fairly a straightforward process of changing the domain from one registrar to another. Each registrar has its own procedure, most of which are automatic. In most cases, you simply fill out a few forms and the rest of the process happens in the background.

Why most people transfer their domains

The current registrar is charging too much for renewals
Annual renewal prices vary. On top of the registration, some registrars charge for Whois privacy, so be sure to add that into the overall price.

The new registrar offers a better experience
Some registrars are just easier to use than others. Look for a registrar that offers security and reliability, along with an easy-to-use interface.

The current registrar lacks customer support
Many registrars do not offer phone support, which often requires you to have some technical skills to set up your domain.

You want to move all your domains to a single provider
If you own multiple domains, it is easier to manage them if they are at a single, centralized platform.

When can I transfer my domain?

If you wish to move your domain name from one registrar to another, you may initiate the transfer process by contacting the registrar to which you wish to transfer the name.

Note that there are certain situations that can prevent a domain name from being transferred, such as if it is subject to a 60-day Change of Registrant lock.

If you purchase the domain on a payment plan, you will be able to fully access the domain. However, it will not be available to transfer until all payments have been made.

How do I transfer a domain?

To begin a transfer, go to the current registrar and look for the transfer link. Keep in mind that transfers can take a few days to complete depending upon the registrar. Once you are ready, follow these steps:

1. Get your authorization code
This code, also known as "auth code" or "EPP" is required for any domain transfer. The auth code is a security measure designed to prevent unauthorized transfers.

Go to your current domain registrar to request an auth code. You will most likely find it in the control panel of your domain. Remember that auth codes expire, so don’t sit on it too long.

2. Unlock your domain
We recommend that you always leave your domains locked at their current registrar. This helps prevent fraud. However, when you are ready to transfer, go to the control panel of your domain and unlock it. The domain must be unlocked before you can transfer.

3. Remember the 60-day domain lock
When you register a domain or transfer it to another registrar, the domain may become locked for 60 days – it depends upon the registrar. Locked domains cannot be transferred. Here’s a couple things to consider:

• Domains purchased at HugeDomains can be transferred from NameBright as soon as the sale is considered final.
• If you transfer the domain to another registrar, the 60-day registrar lock renders the domain ineligible for returns.

4. Whois privacy
If you start a domain transfer with Whois privacy enabled at your current domain registrar, there is a chance that the transfer verification email will not be delivered.

We recommend that you turn off Whois privacy temporarily during the transfer process.

5. Make sure that you have access to your admin email address
Before you initiate a transfer, verify that all your contact information at the current registrar is correct — especially the admin email address. If you do not have access to your email accounts, you will not be able to complete the transfer.

6. Approve your domain transfer
Once the transfer has been initiated by NameBright, go to your NameBright account, and approve the transfer, which will immediately send the domain to the new registrar.
