1991 Sold Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company, Ltd., a newsprint mill jointly owned with Kimberly-Clark Corp. The Company and The Washington Post Company acquired the one-third interest in the International Herald Tribune held by Whitcom Investment Company; now each owns 50% of the publication.

Also acquired The Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Santa Barbara News-Press (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Spartanburg Herald-Journal (Spartanburg, S.C.), Tuscaloosa News (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and The Gadsen Times (Gadsen, Ala.).

1984 Acquired Cruising World magazine and a small cable TV system in Carney Point, N.J. Sold Times Books, its book publishing operation and Anna Maria Islander (Anna Maria, Fla.) and Zephyrhills News (Zephyrhills, Fla.).

Dec. 6, 1983 Split the stock 3 for 1 (Class A & B).

1977 Sold its professional magazine and music publishing businesses.

1975 Acquired Wilmington Morning Star (Wilmington, N.C.).

1974 Acquired Times-News (Hendersonville, N.C.).

1973 Acquired Marco Island Eagle (Marco Island, Fla.) and The Dispatch (Lexington, N.C.). Arthur Ochs Sulzberger becomes chairman and chief executive officer of the Company.

Feb. 23, 1972 Announced a repurchase authorization for up to 150,000 shares.

1972 Acquired Tennis magazine, Lake City Reporter (Lake City, Fla.), The News-Leader (Fernandina Beach, Fla.), The News-Sun (Sebring, Fla.) and Avon Park Sun (Avon Park, Fla.).

Jan. 14, 1969 The New York Times Company stock is listed for the first time on the American Stock Exchange. Its ticker symbol is NYTA.
