First ever steelhead on a fly. The fish of 1000 casts lives up to its title!

Sadly steelhead fishing in my area has gone from some of the best in the world to nothing. They won’t stock steelhead here and the First Nations are allowed to gill net the river and they take everything. It’s sad as hell. Use to have 40+ rivers to catch steelies and now we barely have 3

I feel ya, man….It’s heartbreaking here in the PNW. Rivers and runs that used to always hold fish are now barren. The fire at steamboat springs last year as well as the closing of the Deschutes this year broke my heart.

Sounds a lot like what's going on in BC.

It is a clipped steelhead. Kept this one for some fine dining. The only one I caught in two days of fishing but I’ll never forget the fight. Caught some in the past using sand shrimp but it’s a whole other world steelheading on a fly and I’m in love!

I wonder if SoCal can still have some steelhead...

Have you eaten much wild rainbow? If so, how do the tastes compare. I know this is obviously a hatchery fish with the clipped fin and all, but still they get some time out there so I’m curious if they taste the same, better, worse? I LOVE salmon and trout and all that, but find them slightly different and prefer salmon. Is steelhead the perfect blend? Hah

Taste is close to rainbow in my opinion, but better. Flakey, moist and not “fishy” if bled quickly after caught. 10/10 would eat again.

Tasted like a blend of salmon and trout to me. More like salmon in my case though. Tasted fantastic after catching it just a few hours before cooking.
