'Free Britney!' Miley Cyrus advocates for Britney Spears onstage
Is Miley Cyrus joining the #FreeBritney movement?
While performing in Memphis Saturday night, Cyrus shouted "Free Britney!" to the crowd during a rendition of "Party in the U.S.A.," seemingly alluding to the hashtag that sprung up among Britney Spears fans worried about the singer's well-being.
As Cyrus fans know, "Party in the U.S.A." contains the words "And a Britney song was on" shouting out Spears. Cyrus made her onstage announcement during that part of the song, as the audience sung the normal lyrics.
Cyrus has previously professed her Spears fandom in interviews, claiming in a 2018 radio interview that she's eager to collaborate with her again.
"We did a song on 'Bangerz' called 'SMS (Bangerz),' and it was one of the best experiences ever," Cyrus, referencing her 2013 album. "I would definitely do it again."
Spears recently checked out of the Britney Spears wellness facility she entered earlier in April, according to reports from CNN and People, with a rep for the star declining to comment to USA TODAY.
The theory that Spears is being imprisoned or held against her will, potentially by her team, has been circulating for months and picked up steam in January, when Spears announced she was postponing her Domination Las Vegas residency and her album release to help her father, Jamie Spears recover from a life-threatening ruptured colon.
To dispel rumors that she was being held involuntarily, Spears has shared several social media posts updating fans on her condition and showing her blissfully living her life, including a video of her doing yoga she posted on Sunday.
"Wow! There’s rumors, death threats to my family and my team, and just so many things crazy things being said," she captioned a video she shared to Instagram last month. "I am trying to take a moment for myself, but everything that's happening is just making it harder for me. Don’t believe everything you read and hear."
